What does Empadronamiento mean?

Empadronamiento is a city hall registration to inform the municipal register where you currently reside. The empadronamiento (also called padrón) is a census record, which allows the city to generate a list of local inhabitants.

How long does Padron last?

Once issued, the padrón certificate is valid for 3 months as a document to validate your address. You therefore have to go and obtain a new certificate each time you need it as proof of address.

Many Town Halls offer this possibility through the electronic office on their website, but there is also a national government website through which you can arrange for this, provided you live in one of the provincial capitals, or capital of an autonomous region. You need a digital certificate to access the service.

To keep it simple, everyone who plans on living in Spain for more than 6 months needs to apply for the Empadronamiento certificate. Even those who are coming from EU countries will need to get the Padrón.
